Did your car recently break down and you need to replace a part? If so, you're likely wondering if you should get an original equipment manufacturer part (OEM) or an aftermarket part. Here are a few things that you need to know about auto parts before you make a decision on what kind of part to purchase.

Aftermarket Parts Are Less Expensive

When you compare the price of an OEM part to an aftermarket part, you are going to pay less money overall for that aftermarket auto part. However, be aware that you still get what you pay for in terms of quality. There are both high and low-quality aftermarket parts, since not all parts are created equally. Don't automatically go with the cheapest aftermarket part, since you will need to do some research and go with a trusted aftermarket brand that stands behind what they produce. 

OEM Parts Are Guaranteed to Work

One of the nice things about getting an OEM part is that it is made by the manufacturer of your vehicle. You know that the part that you purchase is guaranteed to work without any issues. While chances are likely that an aftermarket part will work just fine, there is a possibility that there may be more work involved to install it if modifications need to be made. 

Aftermarket Parts Will Not Be Backordered 

There are many different aftermarket parts to pick from at auto parts stores, and chances are that you'll be able to find something that is in stock nearby. This is not always the case with an OEM part. They can be on backorder, and since they are only made by the manufacturer, you simply have to wait until the part is made again and your order can be fulfilled. You could end up waiting a long time for an OEM part simply due to availability. 

OEM Parts Have A Warranty

If you are concerned about the quality of the part you are purchasing, know that you are going to get a long warranty when you purchase an OEM part. This is not always the case with an aftermarket part, which may come with a very short warranty or no warranty at all. Remember that you get what you pay for, and that cheaper aftermarket part is not going to come with the same guarantee.
