Being able to give a small backyard character can sometimes be difficult. If you are someone who wants to make your yard look interesting and different, consider creating a one-of-a-kind hose holder that can be displayed on your home. Use the guide below to learn how to turn a used tire rim to create a unique hose holder for your backyard.

Visit a Salvage Yard

The first thing you will need to do is visit a salvage yard such a Teddy Bears Auto Parts & Salvage Inc to purchase the tire rim. You will be painting the rim so there is no need to purchase it in brand new condition. Walk around the yard and find a rim that has a unique look to it. Once you have found the rim you want, have an attendant pull the rim for you so that you do not have to jack up the car and remove it on your own.

Scuff the Rim

Once you have purchased the rim, bring it back to your home and use 80-grit sandpaper to scuff the surface of the rim. Scuffing the surface allows the paint to stick to the rim well.

Paint the Rim

Use outdoor spray paint to paint the entire rim. Be sure that the paint is applied in smooth, even coats by moving the can the entire time the paint is spraying out of it. Spray the paint in short bursts for even application. Allow the paint to dry for a few hours before continuing to the next step.

Add Interesting Details to the Front of the Rim

Next, you need to make the rim look more interesting. Find the side of the rim that faced out when it was on the car. This is the side of the rim you will decorate because it will be visible when you hang the rim on your home. You can use epoxy to attach imitation gemstones to the rim or pieces of tile to create a mosaic look. Use paint and a small paintbrush to paint an intricate design on the rim, as well. Spray polyurethane gel over the design you create to protect the paint from the elements, if you choose to paint a design on the rim.

After everything has dried, use a drill to drill holes for an anchor hook into the wall where you want the rim to hang. Use galvanized screws to attach the anchor hook to the wall and then you can hang your rim on the hook. You will need to carefully wind the hose around the rim by hand when you want to store it.
